Senator Skoufis Presents Village with $150,000 Grant

On Tuesday, October 29, 2019, Senator Skoufis presented the Village with a $150,000 Grant for the Village Hall Community Center heating and air conditioning system.

From the Senator's Office:

Senator James Skoufis (D-Hudson Valley) presented Mayor Robert D’Amelio with a $150,000 grant to purchase a new HVAC system in order to provide heating, air conditioning, and ventilation at the West Haverstraw Community Center. Many local events and organizations are hosted in the space such as the village's annual holiday celebration as well as regular meetings of the West Haverstraw Seniors Club. There is no air conditioning in the community center and the heating system is currently broken and unfixable; space heaters have been rented during the winter months.

Senator Skoufis said, “Working with Mayor D'Amelio, I was delighted to secure this grant for the West Haverstraw Community Center because delivering air conditioning and heat to our community hubs is of the utmost importance. The West Haverstraw Community Center is the epicenter of community events, hosts many recreational events for local children, and is home to the village's senior citizen activities. All of our residents deserve warmth in the winter and cool air in the summer - and, now they're going to get it."

Mayor D’Amelio said, "The Village operates on a nominal budget and unfortunately would have no means to replace or upgrade the almost twenty-year-old system. We can't thank Senator Skoufis enough for securing this funding for the community center. Our community center is a true community center open to all organizations not just West Haverstraw residents. It is the home base for the Village Summer Youth Program, Haverstraw PAL and the North Rockland Senior Meals on Wheels Activity Center and the West Haverstraw Senior Citizens Club.”

"On any given day we could host activities for Haverstraw Little League, NRYF & Cheer, North Rockland Youth Hockey Association, North Rockland YMCA and Rockland Special Olympics. Various organizations such as Leo Laders Ladies Auxiliary, Stony Point Seals, Project: Possible, S.W. Johnson Ladies Auxiliary and the North Rockland Lions and Rotary have all hosted fundraisers at the center as well as other community-based organizations hosting meetings."

"This grant will allow for the upgrade of a proper HVAC system in the Community Center to ensure a comfortable climate in the gym which will allow the center to continue serving our community."
Senator Skoufis secured the funding during the state's budget negotiations; the grant will be administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. The new HVAC is expected to be installed before the start of summer in 2020.
