Press Conference to Protect Furloughed Federal Employees
The legislation recently passed both the Assembly and Senate that would allow local governments to provide furloughed or unpaid federal workers, impacted by the shutdown, a temporary extension to pay their property taxes. Tax bills are due on January 31st and as the longest shut down in history continues, residents don’t know when they’ll receive their next paycheck. The Governor must sign this into law swiftly in order for residents to take advantage of it in time for the deadline. In addition, local governments must quickly pass a local resolution authorizing the temporary extension prior to January 31st. Local governments with different tax deadlines and fiscal years can still provide this extension as this will cover any future federal government shutdown. The law will be in effect until June 1, 2020.
Mayor Robert R. D’Amelio attended this conference and supports our local residents who are being affected by this current situation. He plans to adopt this legislation, along with his Trustees, at our next Village Board meeting scheduled on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.
